Packing and Moving Tips
Use the correct sized boxes.
Place heavy items, such as books in smaller boxes, lighter items, such as pillows and linens in the bigger ones. Large boxes which are packed with heavy objects, are a common issue with professional movers. Not only do they make a job much harder, but they also have a better chance of breaking when lifted.
Place any heavier items on the bottom and lighter ones on top. Also, if you’re loading the truck by yourself, put the heavier boxes in first, to the front of the truck, to create more balance.
Try not to leave any empty spaces in boxes.
Fill in any gaps with such things as towels, clothing, or packing paper. Movers sometimes won’t touch boxes which feel loosely packed.
Try not to mix items from different rooms in the same packing and moving box.
This will make your packing go much faster, and your unpacking a lot simpler to do.
Label every box with the room it comes from and a description of what’s inside.
This will aid not only you but also your movers so they know where each box should be placed when they are unpacking. Numbering each box and creating a list in a notebook are excellent ways of tracking what you’ve packed and ensuring you still have all your belongings when you begin to unpack.
Tape boxes.
Put tape on the bottom and top seams of the boxes, then using a packing and moving technique, make a couple of wraps around the top and bottom edges of the box, this is where all the stress will be concentrated.
If you are moving expensive artwork, speak to your mover regarding any special crating they may have. Never put oil paintings in paper, it does stick. For pictures that are safely hidden behind glass, put an X using masking tape across the glass, this will help to strengthen it and hold it together if it breaks. Then wrap the pictures in bubble wrap and place them in framing boxes, with cardboard between each one for added protection.
